Huskies top Tigers 3-2
Despite tying the game late, the Huskies outlasted the Tigers 3-2.
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — Saint Mary's University defeated Dalhousie University 3-2, despite Dalhousie scoring two short-handed goals in the third period at home on Saturday night.
The first period opened with Dalhousie's Ben Bujold winning the initial faceoff against Saint Mary's Ben Allison. Saint Mary's Allison scored the first goal of the match at 6:17, assisted by Charlie Da Fonseca and Reid Valade, giving the visitors an early lead. Dalhousie faced multiple challenges as they were put on the penalty kill twice, but Carter Richardson in goal proved resilient, making numerous saves. Despite the power play opportunities, the Huskies were unable to capitalize further, and the period ended with the visitors leading 1-0.
Matthew MacDonald scored for Saint Mary's just 50 seconds into the second period, assisted by Will Chisholm, to extend the lead to 2-0. Dalhousie struggled to find the back of the net despite multiple attempts, with Marcus Vandenberg making several key saves to maintain the Huskies' advantage. Dalhousie faced a penalty at 11:55 when Jared Cosman was called for slashing, giving Saint Mary's a power play opportunity, but they failed to capitalize. Richardson stood strong in goal for Dalhousie, turning away several chances from the Huskies, helping keep the deficit at two goals by the end of the period.
The third period witnessed a flurry of action as Dalhousie and Saint Mary's battled for control. Ethan Wongus broke the deadlock at 15:46, scoring his first goal of the season for Dalhousie with helpers from Madden MacDougall and Nicholas Houben. Shortly after, Zak Smith extended Dalhousie's lead with a goal at 18:36, assisted by Ethan Martini. However, the Huskies responded quickly when Valade found the net at 19:19, assisted by Allison and Da Fonseca, tightening the score. Despite continued efforts from both teams, Dalhousie held on to secure a 2-1 period win, though the final score favored Saint Mary's 3-2.
Smith led the team by scoring one goal on five shots. Wongus also found the net, tallying one goal from four attempts. Richardson made a significant impact in goal, recording 41 saves in a single game. Houben contributed with one assist and won 10 faceoffs, helping to maintain possession for his team.
The Tigers return to the ice on Wednesday when they host Moncton at the Forum.
