Tigers lose a close one agaisnt REDS
Samantha Manieri scored a game-high 14 points in the loss.
DALPEX — Dalhousie Tigers fell to the UNB REDS, 68-58, despite a strong defensive effort with 10 steals. The REDS secured the win with a 41-27 rebounding advantage and seven made three-pointers.
The game opened with Dalhousie quickly responding to the REDS' initial layup with a layup of their own by Victoria Fournier, assisted by Melina Collins. Despite a three-pointer by the REDS' Kylee Speedy, Dalhousie's defensive efforts kept the game close, highlighted by Taya Talbot's steal at 7:56. Dalhousie managed to narrow the REDS' lead with a three-pointer by Simona Matic at 4:33. A series of successful defensive rebounds, including one by Cairo Henning, helped maintain the pressure on the visitors. Dalhousie tied the game with a late jumper by Matic, assisted by Samantha Manieri, closing the quarter in a 15–15 deadlock.
Dalhousie opened the second quarter with a jumper by Manieri, assisted by Collins, to momentarily extend their lead. However, the REDS responded with a series of plays, including a layup by Maheva Ngassam, to shift the momentum. As the quarter progressed, Dalhousie worked to close a growing gap with successful shots from Henning and Manieri, but the REDS managed to maintain their pace with strategic scoring drives. Despite efforts from Dalhousie, including free throws by Collins, the REDS capitalized on turnovers and extended their lead with a late 3-pointer and layup. The quarter concluded with Dalhousie trailing 37-25, as the REDS' scoring run widened the margin.
Dalhousie initiated a strong third quarter with Fournier's layup at 9:38, assisted by Collins, cutting into the REDS' lead. This drive continued with another layup from Fournier, bringing the score to 37-31. Dalhousie maintained pressure, with Collins contributing a key assist to Matic for a three-pointer at 4:29, tightening the contest further. Though the REDS managed a couple of scoring plays, Dalhousie's defense held firm, with Janessa Flewelling and Collins each securing key defensive rebounds. The quarter concluded with Collins converting two free throws, but the REDS' Leah Travers hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to finalize the quarter. Dalhousie outscored the REDS 14-12 in the quarter, yet the REDS led 49-39 entering the final quarter.
Dalhousie opened the fourth quarter with a quick basket by Manieri, assisted by Lauren Steele, trimming the REDS' lead. Collins and Henning provided key defensive stops with steals at critical moments, helping Dalhousie stay within reach. Despite these efforts, the REDS maintained their advantage with consistent free throw shooting. As the quarter progressed, Dalhousie kept the pressure, with Henning hitting a crucial three-pointer to narrow the gap. Matic and Manieri were active on the boards, contributing to second-chance opportunities. However, the REDS' perimeter shooting and free throws allowed them to extend their lead. In the closing moments, Dalhousie continued to fight back, with Collins and Matic converting free throws to keep the game within reach. Despite Dalhousie's persistence, the REDS secured a 68-58 victory, with both teams scoring 19 points in the final quarter.
Collins converted all 10 of her free throw attempts and recorded six assists, contributing significantly to the team's efforts. Manieri scored 14 points, making 6 of 8 field goals, and collected four rebounds. Matic added 13 points, shooting 5 of 13 from the field, and grabbed six rebounds. Henning posted eight points and collected five rebounds while also securing two steals.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, when they host the UPEI Panthers.
