Tigers fall to Sea-Hawks

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Memorial University defeated Dalhousie University 99-87 at The Works Field House, with Dalhousie managing to cut Memorial's largest lead of 18 points in the third quarter but ultimately falling short.
Dalhousie started the first half with a strong presence in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points from close range. Lydell Husbands-Browne contributed significantly with multiple successful layups, supported by Austin Thomson's offensive rebounds. The Sea-Hawks, however, maintained the lead through accurate perimeter shooting, hitting five 3-pointers and establishing a 10-point advantage at one stage.
Dalhousie worked to close the gap as Riley Stewart added points from both the field and the free-throw line, contributing to a late surge. Despite the effort, the half ended with Memorial holding a 26–20 lead, as Dalhousie managed to keep the game within reach.
Dalhousie's Caleb Stewart opened the second half with a 3-pointer, immediately cutting into the Sea-Hawks' lead. Despite a quick response from the home team, Dalhousie's Jacob Christie and Spencer Riar facilitated further scoring opportunities, including another 3-pointer by Stewart, keeping the visitor's side competitive.
Memorial, however, maintained momentum with consistent scoring from inside the paint, extending their advantage through a series of layups and free throws. Dalhousie's Austin Thomson contributed with offensive rebounds and a layup, but the Sea-Hawks' Javian Downey and Norm Burry responded with a series of timely 3-pointers and free throws to push their lead to double digits.
Dalhousie continued to fight, with Isaiah Graham-Roache closing the half with successful free throws after a Memorial foul. The half concluded with the Sea-Hawks leading 56–44.
Dalhousie began the third half striving to reduce the deficit, with Jacob Christie hitting a jumper to bring the score to 46-56 early on. Despite efforts from Husbands-Browne and Riley Stewart, Memorial maintained a double-digit lead, highlighted by a three-pointer from Downey that extended their margin.
In the middle of the half, Caleb Stewart connected on a three-pointer, narrowing the gap to 56-66. Thomson added a layup, but the Sea-Hawks countered with a three-point play, keeping the lead at a comfortable margin. Dalhousie displayed resilience with Riley Stewart's free throws and Husbands-Browne's three-point play, narrowing the deficit slightly.
As the half approached its conclusion, Dalhousie attempted to close the gap with crucial free throws from Spencer Riar, but Memorial's consistent scoring kept them in control. The half ended with the Sea-Hawks leading 81-68, as Dalhousie's late push fell short of overtaking the home team.
Dalhousie started the fourth half with a swift response, narrowing the gap with a three-pointer by Giovanni Ajiamah at 9:20, followed by another from Riley Stewart at 8:54, cutting Memorial's lead to 11 points. Despite turnovers, Dalhousie capitalized on Memorial's errors, with Thomson securing a steal shortly after. The Sea-Hawks sustained pressure with a three-pointer by Jodick Moudiandambu, but Dalhousie maintained focus.
Riley Stewart continued to impact the scoreboard with a layup at 6:05, narrowing the margin. Husbands-Browne contributed a crucial three-pointer at 6:02, further shrinking Memorial's lead. Dalhousie showed resilience, with Riar making a jumper to bring the score to 85-92. However, Memorial extended their lead once again with a late scoring run, including a three-pointer by Burry.
Dalhousie managed to outscore the Sea-Hawks 19-18 in the final half, but Memorial's initial advantage proved decisive. The game concluded with Memorial on top, 99-87.
Husbands-Browne led the way with 23 points and seven rebounds, converting 9 of 18 from the field. Riley Stewart added 22 points, hitting 8 of 17 shots, and collected four offensive rebounds. Caleb Stewart scored 12 points, all from beyond the arc, with four 3-pointers. Thomson contributed with seven points and eight rebounds, while also recording two steals.
The Tigers return to Halifax on Friday, head down the road to battle the SMU Huskies.
