Dalhousie Tigers men’s basketball head coach Rick Plato is pleased to announce the commitment of Alejandro Ruiz for the 2020-21 season.
A native of Valencia, Spain, Ruiz was a member of the Valencia Basketball Club’s U18 team this past season as well as suiting up for ACB Valencia Basket’s second team which plays in the Liga Española de Baloncesto Aficionado (EBA). He and his U18 teammates have earned a spot in the Spanish national championships in each of the four years he’s been with the club, culminating in a fourth-place finish last season after winning their regional qualifying tournament. He also helped lead them to a third-place finish at the 2019-20 Adidas Next Generation Tournament in Valencia after the team won the tournament in 2018-19.
The 6’5 small forward has also been named to the Spanish national U15 team twice in his career.
“I am extremely excited to join the Tigers family,” says Ruiz. “I want to give everything I have on and off the court to help the team be successful.”
Ruiz will be working towards a Bachelor of Management, with a major in commerce while attending Dalhousie.
“Alex is a tremendously dynamic multi-position player, who will be counted on to make an immediate impact in the Tigers line up,” says Plato. “He possesses a deft outside shot, so his addition to the lineup will fill the three-point shooting void we’ll have with the departure of Matt McVeigh and Sascha Kappos. Alex is also a tremendously effective offensive transition player who has a unique ability to get to the basket and finish. He is a great addition to the Tigers for 2020-21.”
The Tigers finished the 2019-20 season with a U SPORTS silver medal after going 19-1 in regular season play.
